Professional Dental Cleanings & Exams
Tacoma, WA

Having Your Teeth Cleaned and Examined by a Professional is an Essential Part of Dental Health

Regardless of how diligent you may be at regular brushing and flossing of your teeth you should have your teeth professionally cleaned and inspected at least every six months. The cleaning that you will receive from our licensed dentist or hygienist will be much more detailed than anything you can do for yourself at home, regardless of how thorough you may be in your own cleaning. During your regular exam and cleaning appointment, we may also take x-rays to identify any potential problem areas.

Mouthwash, floss and toothbrush with toothpaste. The tools and equipment available to Dr. Al and Dr. Zach are specialized to get into those hard-to-reach areas in your mouth that you may have accidentally overlooked during your home dental hygiene routine. Further, regardless of how systematic you are in your cleaning, it is impossible to remove things such as tartar from your teeth without professional assistance and equipment.

What happens during a professional cleaning?

When you come to Bird Family Dentistry for your regular cleaning appointment, we will give you an in-depth cleaning using our specialized tools. During this cleaning, we will first remove any plaque that may be present on or in between your teeth. This is important because plaque—made up of bacteria in the mouth—is a major cause of gum disease, gingivitis, and tooth decay.

Once the plaque has been removed, we will then use a scaler to clean your teeth of any tartar that may remain. It is important that you have this done in a professional setting because tartar—which is plaque that has hardened onto the tooth—cannot be removed by traditional methods.

After your teeth have been thoroughly cleaned, we will then polish them. This polishing will accomplish two things: first, it will remove stubborn stains on the surface of your teeth which cannot otherwise be removed and help you have a bright, clean smile. Second, the application of this polish will actually strengthen your teeth and promote tooth health.

What takes place during an examination?

There are many issues that can slowly develop in your mouth over time. These issues include things such as gum disease, oral cancer, the slow decay of teeth—especially in hidden areas that may be difficult to see—and the development of pockets under the gum line. In addition, there may be hidden problems such as tumors below the gum line, hidden cysts, interior decay, or other things which cannot be detected without the use of sophisticated X-ray equipment. When you come in for a dental examination our highly-trained professionals will look for these and other problems in order to assist you in maintaining a healthy and beautiful smile. In the event that an issue is detected, we will sit down with you, explain the situation, and give you our recommendation for treatment.

If you are overdue for a visit to our office, make sure to call our office at (253) 777-0252 to set your next appointment for an examination and cleaning.
