How Do I Get My Child To Brush Their Teeth?

A young boy brushing his teeth.Motivating children to do what's best for them is always tough. We have all seen the child who declares they are not sleepy, that they don't like to eat their vegetables or who don't want to share, brushing their teeth and taking care of their hygiene is just one more thing that children need to do and don't like. There are tips that parents can follow to help dental habits become part of a child's normal day.

Create a Habit

Much like getting dressed in the morning, or bathing before bed at night, put brushing teeth in the daily regiment of things that we just do. Make teeth brushing part of your normal routine, along with flossing, sooner than you think, it will seem odd to your child to not brush their teeth. Studies show that children like routines.

Demonstrate and then Assist

Children learn through observation. Maybe have them brush their teeth and floss alongside you in the mornings. Demonstrating that brushing your teeth is part of your normal day shows your child the importance of dental care.

Additionally, assist your child in brushing their teeth. Most dentists will tell you that you should be in control of your child's brushing until at least the age of 8. Until your child is at least in second grade, a parent may need to physically assist, or at least be present, while your child brushes and flosses.

Ask Your Child What they Want

Your child may find that they are motivated by that cartoon character toothbrush, spinbrush or character mouthwash. It's ok to listen to them on these decisions, allowing your child to have some control, along with choosing items they are excited about will make their learning easier.
