Keep Your Cavity Pain Under Control Until You Can Visit the Dentist

Posted on 5/13/2016 by Zac Bird
A man suffering from severe cavity pain. You're on a camping trip with your family when the unthinkable happens - you suddenly have severe pain in one of your teeth.

You've had a cavity before, so you suspect that this is what might be going on. Unfortunately, it will be a few days before you'll be able to see the dentist, so what are you going to do in the meantime?

If you are in need of some self-care tips for your cavity pain, consider some of these recommendations:

•  Avoid food items that might aggravate your pain. On your camping trip, you might want to avoid sugary foods like s'mores, cold drinks, or hot campfire coffee, as these items could all increase your discomfort if you are experiencing sensitivity.
•  Eat soft foods that are easy on your mouth. If you brought along some pasta salad, cans of soup, or packaged desserts like pudding cups, these could be good options to keep your mouth as pain-free as possible.
•  Take care when brushing your teeth. Brushing the affected tooth too hard can cause the problem to worsen and may send a shooting pain through your tooth. However, you do still need to brush your tooth in order to prevent food particles and debris from entering the tooth to cause further damage.
•  Use a rinse. If you have mouthwash, go ahead and rinse out your mouth after you eat and brush. If you don't have any with you, try a solution of warm water and salt, if available.

As soon as you get back into civilization, it is important that you follow up with your dentist. If suddenly your pain stops, you should still call your dentist in order to get your tooth checked out. Even if your self-care methods work, you'll still need treatment in order to prevent long-term problems.
