Important Tips for Finding the Right Toothbrush

Several toothbrushes sitting in a glass jar.If you need a new toothbrush, a simple walk down the dental hygiene aisle at your local pharmacy can be an overwhelming experience. There are a ton of options out there in different shapes, sizes, and colors, and all will claim to be the best choice for your teeth.

So, how are you supposed to know which is right for your mouth? Keep these considerations in mind the next time you find yourself shopping for a new brush.

Soft Bristles Are Safest

Dentists tend to agree that you should be brushing with soft bristles. Hard bristles can be damaging to the enamel, especially if you have a tendency to brush a little harder than necessary. You can also cause soft tissue damage, including gums that begin to pull back from the teeth, so choose a softer option.

Size Matters When it Comes to Toothbrush Heads

The shape and size of your toothbrush head will also be important, and you should make sure the head allows your brush to comfortably reach the back molars. A head that is too small might not reach all the necessary areas, so brush in front of a mirror to make sure that each tooth is being covered.

Choose a Handle with a Good Grip
You'll want to make sure that any brush that you choose allows for you to comfortably grab onto the handle, meaning it isn't too thin or too thick. A handle that is lightweight and made out of plastic might be your best option, as it will be easy to maneuver in your mouth.

You Get What You Pay For
If you buy a cheap, dollar store toothbrush, you aren't likely getting a high-quality product. These brushes tend to be from manufacturers who don't make safety a priority, and they may also be made out of inferior materials.
